No charges for Manitowoc man accused of shooting brother

August 30, 2013 By WRN Contributor

The Manitowoc County District Attorney’s office will not file criminal charges against a man accused of fatally shooting his brother earlier this summer.

Prosecutors have determined that 65-year-old Robert Sullivan acted in self-defense when he shot 62-year-old Carey Sullivan on June 23rd. Police were called to the home the two brothers shared and found the Carey Sullivan dead at the scene, along with a 20-gauge shotgun. The two brothers were living in the home of their late parents and had been involved in an ongoing dispute over the estate.

Robert Sullivan was taken into custody, but was then released just a few days later after investigators found evidence that his brother had been threatening him and had a history of aggressive behavior. After a lengthy review, Manitowoc Police Chief Tony Dick says investigators and prosecutors concluded the shooting was in self-defense.

Dick says information from the public was crucial in resolving the case, which is now considered closed.
