Officials encourage fun, safe weekend

August 30, 2013 By Jackie Johnson

Officials want you to have fun this busy travel weekend, but play it safe.

It’s not extremely hot like last week, but it’s still hot through Labor Day. It seems obvious, but it’s important to be reminded about the consequences of the heat, which include possible death.

“Already this summer we have 12 — either confirmed or suspected — cases of heat-related death.”

Tod Pritchard with Wisconsin Emergency Management says just a little shade, water, or A/C and breaks from the heat and outdoor activity will do wonders. He says it’s also critical that we watch out for each other, especially those who are more vulnerable. Pritchard urges common sense.

“If you feel like you’re getting a little dizzy, you’re getting over-heated; just take some time out. Try to get in some shade … if you’re body’s telling you you’re under a little bit stress, you need to take a break; take a little break.”

Another tip for enjoying a safe holiday weekend, be especially watchful for motorcycles while driving as Harley-Davidson’s 110th anniversary brings 500,000 enthusiasts to the roads. And the Badger game is on Saturday, creating heavy traffic in the Madison area.

Many folks will be burning the candle at both ends, trying to cram as much into a few days as possible. Pritchard urges travelers not to drive exhausted, don’t leave pets or kids in the car — even for mere minutes; keep an emergency kit in your car, which includes a phone charger; and if possible, avoid rush hour driving to reduce stress. If you’re feeling tired, drank alcohol, or feel ill, either let someone else drive or postpone the trip.
