Bill mandates school bus seatbelts

September 11, 2013 By Bob Hague

State Senator Tim Cullen (D-Janesville) wants a new state mandate on Wisconsin school districts – three-point seatbelts on all new school buses.

Cullen served on the Janesville school board when it became the first in the state to require school bus seat belts. “I’m disappointed that this issue doesn’t have some broader constituency,” he said. “I’m amazed that we let those kids roll down the road at 55 miles an hour with no seatbelts.”

Cullen’s bill would allow districts to apply for state reimbursement for fifty percent of the cost of seat belts, which he says would bring the cost to four to five thousand dollars per bus.
