Sun glare may have played role in fatal crash

September 23, 2013 By WRN Contributor

The Dane County Sheriff’s Department says the glare of the morning sun may have been what touched off a series of crashes over the weekend, killing one woman and injuring four others.

Dane County Sheriff’s Deputy Joe Carril says 58-year-old Jane Sagen struck a motorcyclist while driving on Highway 30 near the Town of Burke just before seven on Saturday morning. When Sagen got out of her car to check on the rider, she was hit by another vehicle, resulting in a chain reaction crash that involved a total of eight vehicles.

Carril says the crash occurred as the morning sun was coming up “almost directly in line with the roadway.”

Sagen was pronounced dead at the scene, while four other drivers were treated at area hospitals for non-life threatening injuries.
