A special meeting of the Wausau District Board of Education led to a marathon public comment session Thursday night. Board members voted to give local school principals the right to decide how and when school concerts will take place. The vote came shortly before school board officials went into the public comment section of the meeting.
Earlier in the night the school’s attorney, Frank Sutherland, said the district had placed no specific restrictions on the Wausau West Master Singers in discussions over the group’s use of religious music in their concerts. School officials announced that the chorale group would be returning to rehearsals on Monday.
In the end the board voted to return the district’s ruling on religious music to a point before the change in February that started the debate, and to put together a group to create district policy to back the reversion. About 50 people spoke to the board.
