Steve ‘Homer’ True hurt in car crash

November 14, 2013 By Jackie Johnson

UPDATE: Homer heads home

Popular Milwaukee sports talk show host and commentator Steve “the Homer” True was injured in an automobile crash Wednesday morning.

The radio guy and Marquette basketball play-by-play man was in critical condition at Froedtert Hospital on Wednesday night, according to WISN TV 12 News.

Reporter Nick Bohr reported on Wednesday evening TV news the 59-year-old radio veteran was struck by a suspected drunken driver just before 10:00 a.m. and sustained a serious head injury.

Bohr reported that Milwaukee police told him that True had the green light at the intersection but was “T-boned” when a driver of another car ran the red light.

That 44-year-old male driver was taken to an area hospital for a blood test, according to the report. The man was later arrested, accused of intoxicated use of a motor vehicle causing great bodily harm.

Steve True is highly regarded among his peers and fans alike.

Many folks shared their concerns and well wishes on twitter upon hearing the sad news, some using the hashtag #WeLoveHomer and copying their messages to True (@ESPNhomer). Among those expressing their thoughts was Governor Scott Walker (@GovWalker), who tweeted: “Prayers for Steve “The Homer” True. He is a friend, a neighbor and a genuinely great guy!”

True has been the voice of Marquette men’s basketball for more than 20 years. In a written statement, Marquette men’s basketball head coach Buzz Williams wrote: “Homer is one of my all-time favorite people in the world, and I sincerely mean that. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.”

Craig Karmazin, President and CEO of Good Karma Broadcasting, issued a statement online:

“Earlier today, ESPN Wisconsin’s Steve “The Homer” True was injured in a traffic accident on Milwaukee’s northwest side. I spoke with Homer’s wife, Nancy, tonight. She said Homer is doing pretty well and that doctors want to monitor his condition overnight. On behalf of the True family and all of us at ESPN Wisconsin, I’d like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers.”

Wednesday was True’s 59th birthday.
