Boy dies after snow-covered roof collapsed

January 2, 2014 By Jackie Johnson

Child crushed by roof taken off of life support

A 10-year-old boy, victim of a roof collapse, is now dead according to Chippewa County Sheriff James Kowalczyk. The father of 10-year-old Nelson Nolt says the boy was taken off of life support on Monday.

Last weekend in the town of Delmar, Nelson and his sister, 7-year-old Norma Nolt, were sitting on top of a skid steer inside of a silo room when snow fell from the barn onto the roof of the silo, causing it to collapse. The roof crushed both children, who were found without a pulse by their father Laymar Nolt.

Saturday saw warm temperatures, with a high of 43 degrees. So, officials say, instead of it slowly melting and dripping off, the snow came crashing down from the metal roof all at the same time.

The two children were initially taken to hospitals in Eau Claire and later transferred to a hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. The Sheriff says Norma is currently on life support and her condition is very serious.

A wake and funeral for the boy is scheduled for Friday.
