Brewers say not so fast on Garza deal

January 24, 2014 By Bill Scott

It was widely reported on Thursday that the Milwaukee Brewers had agreed to a 4-year, $52-million contract with free agent starting pitcher Matt Garza, but the Brewers put the brakes on the accuracy of that report last night.

The Brewers organization issued a statement saying negotiations between the two sides are ongoing but there is no deal yet.

If an agreement is reached at the reported $52-million, it would be the largest free-agent deal in club history.

Garza went 10-6 with a 3.82 ERA in 24 games last season with the Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers.  The Cubs traded Garza to Texas last July for four players, including some of the Rangers’ top minor-league prospects.

The 30-year old Garza was considered the best pitcher left on the free-agent market after the Yankees signed Japanese right-hander Masahiro Tanaka to a 7-year, $155 million deal on Wednesday.
