Starting in March, hunting groups can apply a grant from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to run programs that attract and retain hunters. The move comes several months after the agency canceled a grant to a politically connected group.
Keith Warnke is the DNR’s hunting and shooting sports coordinator. He said the new grants are worth $10,000, and the agency has $200,000 available.
The state’s aging demographics mean that the number of hunters in Wisconsin is expected to drop in the coming years. The DNR and some Republican lawmakers came under fire last year, when the agency awarded a $500,000 grant to a controversial group, the United Sportsmen of Wisconsin Foundation.
