Game day at Lambeau looks brutally cold

January 2, 2014 By Bob Hague

The toughest opponent on Sunday may well be Mother Nature. As of mid morning on Thursday, there were still more than 5,000 unsold tickets to Sunday’s Packers playoff game in Green Bay – and the frigid forecast could be a factor. “It looks like temperatures will be around 4 degrees for the kickoff, with winds out of the west to northwest at 10 to 20 miles an hour, with windchills of 20 below,” said Meteorologist Scott Cultice with the National Weather Service in Green Bay.

The Packers and San Francisco 49ers are set to play at 3:40 Sunday afternoon. “As the game progresses, temperatures are going to fall, probably below zero,” Cultice said, advising fans to dress appropriately.

Lambeau Field was the site of the coldest game in NFL history (in terms of air temperature) was the 1967 Ice Bowl between the Packers and Dallas Cowboys, when the temperature dropped to a -15 degrees. If the temperature drops below -1 degree during Sunday’s game, it will be the second-coldest game in Lambeau Field history, according to the official Packers website.
