Get ready for an arctic blast

January 3, 2014 By Bob Hague

If you think it’s been cold enough already this winter – just wait. After a brief warmup on Saturday, Wisconsin – and indeed much of the nation – is in store for brutally cold conditions. Brian Olson is a meteorologist for WKOW in Madison.

“This time the true ‘arctic express’ – coming right from the pole, is going to be seeing down into the northern states” Olson said.

He expects high temperatures early next week could be as low as 10 to 15 below zero – with wind chills even lower. “Monday morning, Tuesday morning, could be down around 40 to 45 degrees below zero wind chill,” Olson said. He expects it will be cold enough for many schools to cancel what would normally be the first day of classes after the Christmas break.

There’s some good news – Olson predicts a pattern shift later next week should mean warmer temperatures – maybe even above freezing – by week’s end.
