Marquette ends Friar’s 5-game win streak

January 31, 2014 By Bill Scott

Marquette coach Buzz Williams started two freshmen last night, JaJuan Johnson and Deonte Burton and rotated players at a fevers pace.  His lineup change helped Marquette hold off Providence 61-50 in Big East action on Thursday night at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

Marquette was able to withstand a 16-0 Providence run in the second half to win the game.  The Golden Eagles (12-9, 4-4 Big East) heard boo’s from the crowd during the collapse, something Buzz Williams was disappointed to hear.

The loss for the Friars ended a 5-game win streak.

Davante Gardner scored 14 points to lead Marquette, keeping their NCAA tournament hopes in the distance.

The Golden Eagles travel to New York to face St. John’s on Saturday.
