One of the ways Mercury Marine in Fond du Lac is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year is by opening up a museum. Steve Fleming of Mercury says it will be located on Scott Street in Fond du Lac next to the Children’s Museum and will open in a few months. He says over the years those loyal to Mercury Marine products have collected items that will be featured in the museum.
Mercury’s history began in Cedarburg in 1939 when Mercury founder Carl Kiekhaefer purchased a bankrupt engine manufacturing plant. The move to Fond du Lac and its current headquarters didn’t occur until 1946. Fleming says the museum will allow the company to showcase some of that history.
A lot of people in the Fond du Lac area have been affiliated with Mercury over the years, Fleming says, and it would be nice if the museum became a destination point.
Mercury’s actual 75th anniversary is today. Fleming says Mercury employees worldwide will be treated to lunch, one of the many activities planned for the year-long celebration.
