State trooper injured after being hit by driver

January 27, 2014 By WRN Contributor

A trooper with the Wisconsin State Patrol is hospitalized with serious injuries, after he was struck by a car Sunday that lost control on U.S. Highway 41 near Menasha. 36-year-old State Trooper Justin Hansen was taken to Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah following the crash.

Police say Hansen was stopped at the scene of another accident at the time. He was retrieving equipment from the trunk of his cruiser when another driver lost control of their vehicle and crashed into him, pinning him to rear end of his cruiser.

State Patrol Captain Nick Scorcio says the accident is just another reminder of how important it is for Wisconsin drivers to use caution during bad weather, and to observe the state’s move over law. Under that law, drivers are supposed to move over, or at least slow down, when they see an emergency vehicle with its lights on. Scorcio says those officers are “putting their lives on the line to serve you,” so drivers need to be extra considerate when they see flashing lights coming up behind them or along the side of the road.
