Suspects sought in double fatality hit and run

January 13, 2014 By WRN Contributor

The Polk County Sheriff’s Department is requesting the public’s help identifying a vehicle that was involved in a double fatal hit and run over the weekend. A pick-up truck driver killed two pedestrians and fled the scene Saturday night on Polk County Trunk E in the Round Lake Indian community. Investigators said the two men were involved in a physical altercation at a nearby home that continued outside on the roadway just before the truck hit them.

The victims have been identified as 41-year-old Richard Cobenais of Frederic and 28-year-old Benjamin Jaurez of rural Luck.

According to an updated press release, the mean were struck by a dark colored pickup truck, possibly a Ford. The pickup may have two auxiliary amber warning lights mounted to the top of the cab. Witnesses noticed a blue plastic barrel in the box of the pickup. The pickup will likely have damage to the front concentrated at the undercarriage. There were at least two people in the truck, both believed to be white males and both wearing baseball caps. The driver of the pickup stopped briefly before leaving southbound on County Road E.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Polk County Sheriff’s Department at 715-485-8300.
