High flying Creighton gets by Marquette

February 20, 2014 By Bill Scott

Marquette had been searching for that signature win that has eluded them so far this season, but it wasn’t in the cards as the 11th ranked Creighton Blue Jays pulled away for a 85-70 win over the Golden Eagles at the BMO Harris Bradley Center on Wednesday night.

Player of the Year candidate Doug McDermott scored 17 of his 25 points in the second half as the Blue Jays pulled away for their 22nd win (22-4, 12-2 Big East) of the season.

Creighton shot 62% from the field and made more than half of their 23 three-point field goal attempts.

Marquette meanwhile, missed 16 free throws, something that coach Buzz Williams said hurt them.

The loss dropped Marquette to 7-6 in the Big East and knocked them out of a third place tie.

Creighton captured both matchups  between the two teams this season and Doug McDermott showed once again why he’s the favorite to win college player of the year.

The Golden Eagles have five games left in the regular season, starting with a trip to Chicago to face DePaul on Saturday.
