St. Croix County reports second fatal crash involving train

February 5, 2014 By WRN Contributor

For the second time in three days, a train versus vehicle crash has claimed a life in St. Croix County.

The St. Croix County Sheriff’s Department says the latest crash was reported just before noon Wednesday on Highway 12 in Baldwin. A northbound vehicle reportedly entered the crossing and then tried to back up when the driver noticed the oncoming train, but was unable to reverse the vehicle before the train struck the passenger side.

The passenger, a 69-year-old woman from Cumberland, was pronounced dead after being extracted from the vehicle. The driver of the car, a 69-year-old man from Cumberland, was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

On Monday, the driver of a septic truck was killed at a railroad crossing in Hammond Township. Police say 53-year-old Benjamin C. Morgan of Hudson died after a train struck his vehicle while he was crossing the tracks.

UPDATE: The Sheriff’s office initially indicated two people died in Wednesday’s crash. An updated released was issued later indicating only one person was killed.
