March 9, 2014 By Bill Scott

The 5th ranked Wisconsin men’s hockey team clinched a top-two seed and a first round bye in the upcoming Big Ten men’s hockey tournament.

Mark Zengerle scored the game clinching goal with 20.3 seconds left as the Badgers won their fifth straight game.  The Badgers
(21-9-2 overall, 13-5-1 Big Ten) have an outside chance of winning the inaugural Big Ten title.  For that to happen, the Badgers must both of its games at Michigan State on the final weekend of regular league play and Minnesota must lose both of its games at Michigan.  The Gophers currently have 42 points while the Badgers have 37.  Three points are awarded for each league victory.

The Badgers improved to 12-3-1 on Saturdays and 15-0-1 when leading after two periods.

The Badgers were out-shot 43-29 in the contest, but goaltender Joel Rumpel had 41 saves to pull out another win.
