Co-sleeping death in Beloit

April 23, 2014 By WRN Contributor

Beloit police are investigating the death of a three-month-old baby.

A Beloit mother awakes to find her newborn dead after falling asleep with it on the couch.

Dan Risse is the Beloit Police captain. “Approximately 4:15 am the Rock County Communications Center received a distress call … reporting that an infant child wasn’t responsive.”

Risse says Fire Department personnel performed CPR on the baby and transported it to Beloit Memorial Hospital where it was pronounced dead.

Police say the investigation indicates the 16-year-old mother fell asleep with the baby on the couch after feeding it around midnight. When the mother woke hours later, the infant was unresponsive.

An autopsy is being conducted and the incident remains under investigation. It’s unclear if the mother could face criminal charges.
