A Kenosha man is facing a felony animal mistreatment charge in Racine County for leaving his dog guarding the house in a sun room, on a hot day, without food or water.
26-year old Matthew Petersen reportedly told police he had the Neapolitan mastiff and pit bull mix watching the house because of a previous break-in. His plan was to be gone maybe half-an hour, according to the charging document. Instead, he returned three-hours later. By that time, police had forced their way in to the home, but the dog later died.
The report says that, with no windows open, that sunroom baked to more than 100 degrees.
Petersen’s bond condition includes possessing no animals. He’ll be back in court next week.
