Brewers drop into 3rd place in NL Central, out of Wild Card spot

September 8, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped three out of four to the St. Louis Cardinals over the weekend, including Sunday’s 9-1 setback.  It’s the 11th loss in the last 12 games overall.

The Brewers trail the Cardinals by five games and are a half game behind the Pittsburgh Pirates for the final NL Wildcard spot.

The Brewers committed three errors and the Cardinals took advantage.  But the fourth inning is all they would need, scoring four times to send the 31,771 fans in attendance at Miller Park into a wave of boos.

Jimmy Nelson (2-7) made it through five innings and took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks to go along with three strikeouts.  No announcement has been made, but Nelson would appear to be headed to the bullpen.

Carlos Gomez, who has been out of the lineup with a wrist injury, came on to pinch hit in the 9th and drove in the Brewers only run with a single.

Adam Wainwright (17-9) scattered seven hits to go the distance and earn the victory.

Yovani Gallardo (8-8, 3.43) pitches for the Brewers tonight as they open up a 4-game series against the Miami Marlins at Miller Park.  Brad Penny (1-1, 6.61) pitches for Miami.
