Officials from the Drug Enforcement Administration say 17 tons of medication were collected from Wisconsin for the last Drug Take-Back Day in September.
That number is down slightly from the last three events in 2013 and 2014. Nationwide, Wisconsin ranked fifth in the nation for returned drugs behind California, Texas, New York, and Illinois. Nationwide, over 309 tons of drugs were turned over to local law enforcement for delivery to DEA disposal centers.
The September event was the ninth and final time the DEA will be running a take back event themselves. Recent regulations changes will allow for long term local disposal of drugs at pharmacies, clinics and other medical facilities.
