The numbers just keep getting worse for the Milwaukee Brewers, who watched their loss total rise to ten in the season’s first dozen games after Sunday’s 5-2 setback to the Pirates at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.
Matt Garza (1-2) took the loss, allowing all five runs on seven hits during his six innings of work. The righthander’s ERA is now 5.40.
The 2-10 start is not only the worst in franchise history, it also means Milwaukee has the worst record in the majors by a half game (Miami is 3-10). They currently sit three games behind the Reds in the Central Division, and 6.5 games back of frontrunning St. Louis.
Garza allowed two runs in the first inning Sunday on three hits, a walk, and a wild pitch. Third baseman Luis Jimenez also committed a throwing error on an infield single by the inning’s second batter.
Milwaukee was able to tie it in the second. Scooter Gennett and Jimenez tallied back-to-back singles, and were pushed across home plate with RBI at bats from Jean Segura and Jonathan Lucroy.
However it was all Pirates (6-6) after that, as Milwaukee’s winless streak reached five games. The three-game sweep by the Pirates was their first over Milwaukee since 2013. So far in 2015, they are 5-1 against the Brewers.
Milwaukee will try to snap the losing skid when they open a seven-game homestand against the Reds (5-7) and Cardinals (8-3) tonight at Miller Park. Wily Peralta (0-1) throws opposite Anthony DeSclafani (1-0). First pitch at 6:20pm.
