The cause of a fire that killed an 88-year old homeowner in Racine County remains under investigation, with neighbors stunned by the tragedy on their normally quiet island peninsula.
The name of the victim continues to be withheld, as well as two women from inside the home who were taken to Aurora Saint Lukes Medical Center in Milwaukee with undisclosed injuries. The home is located on a small island, off one of the streets, along the Fox River. A neighbor called 911, with first arriving Waterford fire crews noting intense flames from the upper level, and thick black smoke.
The man who died had mobility issues, and was found unresponsive on the second floor, where most of the fire damage occurred. The Racine County Fire Investigation Task Force and Sheriff’s Department are waiting on autopsy results as part of the probe into what started the fatal fire.
