About 750 people turned out at a Menasha Park Thursday night for a prayer vigil honoring the victims of a mass shooting.
The service, part of a National Day of Prayer, was held in a park near the Trestle Trail Bridge. It’s where 27-year-old Sergio Valencia del Toro of Menasha opened fire at random on Sunday night, fatally shooting three people and wounding another, before eventually killing himself. Following the prayer vigil, many people walked out to a makeshift memorial at the center of the bridge.
Landon Churchill of Freedom Fellowship Church helped organize the event. He said it “was a blessing to see the community come together.”
Town of Menasha Police Officer Jason Weber said a lot of people really needed to join together in the wake of the tragedy. He said “It just shows the resilience of the Fox Valley and really instills why it’s such a good place to live.”
31-year-old Adam Bentdahl of Appleton, 33-year-old Jon Stoffel of Neenah, and Stoffel’s 11-year-old daughter Olivia were killed by the gunman, while 32-year-old Erin Stoffel was shot three times and survived. She continues to recover at an area hospital.
