Road crew worker struck, killed in work zone

May 27, 2015 By WRN Contributor

A Shawano County Highway Department flagman has died after being struck by a vehicle Tuesday morning. The victim has been identified as Derek Stempa, 30, from Shawano.

The crash happened around 11:45 Tuesday morning at State Highway 47 and County Highway G in Red Springs, according to WSAU. Deputies say the driver of the vehicle is 68-year-old Dennis St. John, who had been travelling southbound on Highway 47. Traffic in the area had been reduced to one lane because of construction.

Stempa was transported from the scene to Shawano Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Traffic had to be rerouted for several hours while a crash reconstruction team from the State Patrol was on scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
