The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday turned down a request to hear an appeal in an ongoing John Doe investigation from Wisconsin.

The high court had been asked to review an appeals court decision from last September, which found a lawsuit against the probe should be resolved in the state courts – not the federal court system. That ruling reversed a previous federal ruling, which found prosecutors exceeded their authority in pursuing the John Doe.

The largely secret investigation is looking into potential illegal campaign coordination between Governor Scott Walker and independent groups while defending himself against a recall in 2012. Those outside groups have argued that there is nothing illegal about their activities and that the investigation is politically motivated.

The John Doe remains on hold because of ongoing lawsuits in the state courts, which are currently under review by the Wisconsin Supreme Court. The probe has not resulted in any charges being filed.
