Madison’s Steve Stricker withdrew from a 36-hold sectional qualifier in Columbus, Ohio on Monday and won’t tee it up at the 115th U.S. Open.

Stricker shot a 71 on Monday and was far off the pace after the opening round.  A field of 120 golfers was playing for 15 spots in the upcoming U.S. Open.

Stricker has made a total of 19 U.S. Open appearances and has made the cut 17 times.  His best finish came at Pinehurst in 1999 when he ended up 5th.

The 2015 U.S. Open starts June 18th at Chambers Bay near Tacoma, Washington.

Madison’s Jerry Kelly and Mark Wilson of Menomonee Falls also shot 71’s, Kelly in Memphis, Tennessee and Wilson in Columbus and both also withdrew.

Amateurs Jordan Niebrugge of Mequon and Charlie Danielson of Osceola both failed to advance as well.  Fox Point native Skip Kendall fell far short of qualifying during an event in Purchase, New York.
