Armed security guards will soon be added to the headquarters for the state Department of Justice.

Starting next month, the Department of Administration says armed guards will be located at the two main public entrances to the Risser Justice Center. The building, located in downtown Madison across the street from the Capitol building, houses most DOJ offices, the state law library, and other offices. Visitors to the building are already required to go through security, where unarmed guards are currently in place.

DOA spokesman Cullen Werwie said the move is part of a security upgrade for the facility, and is not in response to any specific threat.

In a statement, Attorney General Brad Schimel said “It is important for us to have security given the nature of the information that our staff of agents, attorneys and others gather on a daily basis; our employees deserve to feel safe in their workplace.”
