The Milwaukee Brewers have shut pitcher Jimmy Nelson down for the rest of the season after he took a line drive to the head in his last outing last week.

Nelson suffered a contusion but not a concussion.  He spent a couple of nights in the hospital under observation.  He finishes 11-13 with a 4.11 ERA and 148 strikeouts in 177 1/3 innings.

Tyler Cravy is taking Nelson’s spot in the rotation tonight, pitching at Chicago against Cubs ace Jake Arrieta.

Ryan Braun

Ryan Braun missed his third straight game on Monday and it was announced that he has a herniated disc in his lower back that will need surgery in the offseason.

Braun was hoping to return to the lineup before the end of the season, but it remains uncertain whether the Brewers will allow that to happen.  Domingo Santana started in his place on Monday night.
