The Marquette Golden Eagles couldn’t have picked a better time for their first Big East win of the season. They marched into Providence, Rhode Island and upset the 8th-ranked Friars 65-64.
Freshman Henry Ellenson blocked point guard Kris Dunn’s final shot to preserve the win, their first over top-10 team since it beat No. 5 Miami in the 2013 NCAA Tournament and first as an unranked team since beating No. 4 Louisville on back in 2004.
Marquette’s win came after a pair of losses to Seton Hall and Georgetown to start the Big East season.
Ellenson finished with 13 points, ten rebounds and four blocks for Marquette, which opened a 12-point lead in the first half.
The Golden Eagles committed 19 turnovers, which allowed the Friars to stay in the game. Providence eventually took a lead in the second half before Marquette finished strong for the win.
