Sturgeon season in the books

February 29, 2016 By WRN Contributor

Wisconsin’s sturgeon spearing season came to a close Sunday on Lake Winnebago. Spearers registered 396 sturgeon from the big lake over the past 16 days, and that’s a fraction of last year’s total.

Last year was the sixth-best on Lake Winnebago, 1,870 fish. This year’s total is the lowest since 2013, when spearers got 306.

They only registered eight Sunday, and DNR fisheries biologist Ryan Koenigs says he’s not surprised. He says many people pulled their shacks from the ice on Saturday.

The total from the seven-day season on the upriver lakes was 306 sturgeon. The overall figure for this year was 703.
