Hail to the cheese — Wisconsin has contest winner

March 10, 2016 By WRN Contributor

For the first time since 1988, a Wisconsin cheese wins World Championship Cheese Contest.

A hard smear-ripened cheese that’s produced in Monroe has won the best in show award after 3 days of competition in Madison. More than 2900 entries from around the world were judged and the cheese made by Emmi Roth USA beat out 15 other finalists.

A Wisconsin string cheese made by Dale Olson of Grantsburg won the competition 28 years ago.
