Analysis: Bradley had ‘dark money’ advantage

April 7, 2016 By Bob Hague

There was a big spending gap in the race for state Supreme Court in Wisconsin.

Wisconsin Democracy Campaign executive director Matt Rothschild said analysis shows outside ‘dark money’ groups spent more than $2.5 million on behalf of Justice Rebecca Bradley.

“They outspent groups that were supporting Judge Kloppenburg by almost four to one,” Rothschild said.

Groups spending on behalf of state Appeals Judge JoAnne Kloppenburg spent about $710,000.

Rothschild said the spending by outside groups makes “a joke” of the supposedly nonpartisan supreme court elections.

“Those on the right are supported by huge dark money groups, and those on the left or liberal side are supported by dark money groups too, that just don’t seem to have as much money as those on the Republican side,” Rothschild said.

Bradley was elected Tuesday to a 10-year seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. She received a little over 52 percent of the vote following a bitterly acrimonious race.
