A lawsuit challenging Wisconsin’s 2011 legislative redistricting is headed to trial.

Several Democrats sued last July over the maps drawn by the Republican-controlled Legislature, which they argued were gerrymandered by the GOP to benefit the party in future elections. A three-judge panel on Thursday denied a state motion to dismiss the lawsuit, saying the case should be decided after a trial has been held.

A spokesman with the Wisconsin Department of Justice said they are disappointed by the ruling, but are confident the state will ultimately prevail in the case.

The trial is set to begin on May 24th, in Madison.
