Kenosha school district reverses decision on transgender prom king

April 7, 2016 By WRN Contributor

A transgender student at Kenosha’s Tremper High School will be allowed to run for prom king.

The Kenosha Unified School District initially said 16-year old Ash Whitaker, who started at Tremper as a girl named Savannah, but now identifies as a boy, would only be allowed to run for prom queen. After a student protest Tuesday, plus an online petition that garnered more than 5,100 signatures, the district has changed it stance.

Communications Director Tanya Ruder says any student who meets the requirements to run for prom court can be on the ballot under the gender in which they identify. Ruder said the district has been in the process of gathering more information toward a policy on transgender inclusion issues.
