New Superior bishop ordained

April 14, 2016 By Bob Hague

The Catholic Diocese of Superior has a new bishop. Bishop James P. Powers was ordained as the 11th bishop of the Diocese of Superior during a Mass on Thursday.

The 63-year-old Powers was named bishop of the diocese in December. The diocese had been without a bishop for more than a year after Bishop Peter F. Christensen was assigned to Boise, Idaho.

Powers will oversee the diocese that includes more than 65,000 Catholics in more than 100 parishes and 15 Catholic elementary schools across 16 counties of northern Wisconsin.
