The Memorial Day travel period could be a big one in Wisconsin, and across the country.
The results of a survey from AAA show an estimate 38 million Americans plans to take a trip of 50 miles or more during the upcoming holiday period, which runs from Thursday through next Monday. In Wisconsin, about 755,000 residents are expected to be a part of the overall number of travelers, which is a 2.2 percent increase over last year.
AAA-Wisconsin spokesman Nick Jarmusz says it’s predicted to be the biggest Memorial Day travel weekend that’s been seen in over a decade, and the second largest the auto club has on record.
A big reason driving travelers to head out is the prolonged period of low gas prices. Jarmusz says the fact that pump prices have remained well below their average point for much of the past year means people have been able to build up some savings, which many are deciding to use on travel plans.
