Wisconsin manhunt ends with officer-involved shooting on interstate near Madison

May 2, 2016 By Andrew Beckett

The search for a suspect in a fatal shooting in West Allis and a drive-by shooting in Sauk County ended in Dane County Sunday, with police opening fire on an armed man on Interstate 90/94 just north of Madison.

West Allis police responded to an apartment complex just before 7 a.m. Sunday, where a 42-year old man had been fatally shot. Then, just before 3 p.m., a call came in to Sauk County 911 about a drive-by shooting involving a woman with critical injuries. A witness then called 911 and reported they were following the suspect’s vehicle, an SUV, through Columbia County and heading towards Dane County.

Law enforcement from multiple agencies moved to intercept the vehicle, deploying tire spikes to disable the SUV on I-90/94 just past DeForest. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office said a 20-year-old man from West Allis then exited the vehicle and moved towards law enforcement while carrying a gun. The man ignored verbal commands from officers, and that’s when two sheriff’s deputies from Columbia County shot him. The suspect was flown from the scene by helicopter and his condition has not been released.

Police also took two passengers in the vehicle into custody. An investigation is ongoing.
