An investigation by the Marines has officially determined that John Bradley was not in the iconic World War II photograph of the flag raising at Iwo Jima.
Bradley grew up in Antigo. He’s included in the national Iwo Jima memorial, next to Arlington National Cemetery, outside of Washington D.C.
In a statement released Thursday, the U.S. Marine Corps said an investigation determined that the Private First Class Harold Schultz of Detroit was in the photo, and had previously been identified as Bradley. Bradley did take part in an earlier flag raising, while a photographer later re-created the scene for the now iconic photograph.
The Marines looked into the situation, after two amateur historians claimed another man was in the picture, instead of Bradley.
