The Milwaukee Brewers committed three errors in the first inning and two more in the second, falling 8-1 to the Arizona Diamondbacks at Miller Park.
Brewers manager Craig Counsell said, “The first inning was out of the Twilight Zone. It’s not something I’ve ever seen. It was just strange, the first two innings really. It was a tough night. It was a straight night. You just put it in the rearview mirror and move on.”
With the Brewers trailing 6-0 in the third inning, Shortstop Jonathan Villar was thrown out trying to steal third with two outs and cleanup hitter Jonathan Lucroy at the plate. That move drew the ire of Counsell, who benched Villar for the remainder of he game.
“It was due to the base running situation,” Counsell said. “That’s just something he has to improve on. He understands he made a mistake. We’ll just move forward from it.”
Jasmany Tomas clubbed a pair of home runs, a three-run shot in the first and a two-run shot later on.
Jimmy Nelson took the loss, despite striking out the side in both the second and third innings. Nelson fell to 6-9, allowing eight runs and nine hits.
The Brewers can still win the series. They’re up two games to one with the series finale at Miller Park this afternoon.
