Sawyer County Clerk of Courts killed

July 29, 2016 By Bob Hague

An elected official in northwest Wisconsin has been killed in an apparent murder/suicide. According to the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office, 56-year-old Claudia Burgan, the county clerk of courts, was shot in the chest Wednesday night at her home about 12 miles east of Hayward — and she died later at a hospital.

Deputies found 58-year-old Dennis Meyer, who lived with Burgan, dead outside the residence from an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound.

The state Justice Department is assisting Sawyer County with the investigation. Sawyer County Circuit Court Judge John Yackel, in a Facebook post Thursday, said of Burgan that the county “has lost a dedicated public servant and we at the courthouse have lost a dear friend.”
