The fourth-ranked Wisconsin volleyball team opened the 2016 season with a 3-1 win at number-six Hawaii late Friday night.  The Badgers knocked off the Rainbow Wahine 25-16, 25-16, 24-26 and 25-23 in the opening round of the Rainbow Classic.

Freshman Molly Haggerty made an impressive debut, recording a double-double with a match-high 19 kills while adding 16 digs.  Senior Haleigh Nelson added 14 kills while junior Lauryn Gillis chipped in 12 putaways.

“I thought we played well,” head coach Kelly Sheffield said.  “I thought we served and passed really well the first couple of sets.  I thought defensively in the backcourt we were really, really good.

“We serve received really good.  Our passing numbers were fantastic.”

Wisconsin faces Arizona tonight at 9:45 p.m.  The Wildcats lost 3-1 to Kansas State in Friday’s opening match.  The Badgers will wrap up the 3-team, 3-day tournament with a match against Kansas State on Sunday (5 p.m.).
