A man fatally shot by police officers in New London last week was armed with a plastic gun.
A spokesman with the state Department of Justice said Sunday that 31-year-old Kole Knight was shot by two officers after he displayed a plastic look-alike firearm. The officers were approaching Kole at the time because of an outstanding warrant.
New London Police Chief Jeffrey Schleute says the officers were on patrol in a marked squad car when they saw the man, who they knew had a warrant out for his arrest. When officers confronted him, he pulled out what appeared to be a weapon.
Knight is formerly from Menasha, but court records indicate he’s from Neenah. His fiancee said Knight had said he wanted police to kill him and said he knew if he showed something that looked like a gun, they would.
An investigation by the state Division of Criminal Investigation is ongoing.
