The documentary “Making a Murderer” has won four Emmy awards for Netflix.
The Creative Arts Emmys were presented the past two nights, in advance of the primetime Emmys to be shown live on ABC next Sunday. “Making a Murderer” won the Emmys for outstanding documentary or non-fiction series, writing, picture editing, and directing.
The series drew worldwide attention late last year for chronicling the story of Avery’s false conviction and exoneration for a rape he didn’t commit, and then the investigation and prosecution in Manitowoc County that eventually led to him and nephew Brendan Dassey being convicted for the 2005 murder of photographer Teresa Halbach.
The series prompted calls for Avery and Dassey to be released. Avery’s attorney plans to seek an appeal, while Dassey had his conviction overturned by a federal judge. The state is appealing that decision.
