Badger women upset Green Bay

December 16, 2016 By Bill Scott

Suzanne Gilreath

The Wisconsin women’s basketball team earned their biggest win of the season, upsetting in-state rival Green Bay 54-53 at the Kress Center on Thursday night.

It was just the second loss of the season with the first coming against then number-1 ranked Notre Dame by four points.

The Badgers (5-8) trailed by four points with 1:09 left to play.  Suzanne Gilreath drained a three-pointer and the Badgers trailed 53-52 with 45 second to play.

Following a Green Bay miss, the Badgers had the ball back with 28 seconds left.  The Badgers called timeout and found Malayna Johnson inside.  Her left handed shot at the basket gave the Badgers a one-point lead with 17-seconds left to play.

Another miss by the Phoenix at the end gave the victory to Wisconsin.

Gilreath had 17 points and Cayla McMorris 15 for the Badgers.  Mehryn Kraker had 18 points to lead Green Bay.

The Phoenix shot just 31% from the field and fell to 8-2 on the season.
