UPDATE: driver charged in death of Racine city employee

December 15, 2016 By WRN Contributor

A 20-year-old man has been charged in the the death of a Racine Public Works employee who died Wednesday after being pinned against his truck by a speeding car.

Benjamin Bell was in court on Thursday, where he was charged with homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle in the death of Mark Gates.

Gates was collecting recyclables when witnesses said the car struck him after weaving across both traffic lanes.

Gates was pastor of Christ Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, and was a “highly respected and dedicated employee, as well as a deeply faithful and caring pastor, and he will be missed by all who knew him,” Racine Mayor John Dickert said.
