He's the youngest to ever be elected mayor in La Crosse. 24-year-old Matt Harter beat La Crosse Common Council member Dorothy Lenard in the race to become the city's next mayor.
His quest for the seat came when returned home from the US Navy last year. The taxes on his property, owned since age 15, had risen to an ""astronomical rate." Harter says other folks had also voiced concern, especially the elderly.
Harter campaigned on promises to reduce property taxes and run a transparent government. On election night, he gained 55 percent of the vote. When speaking about the election the young man says two words come to mind, "thank you."
In just under two weeks Harter will be sworn in.
