A Wisconsin whiz kid is “America’s Top Young Scientist.” Liam McCarty of Elm Grove beat out ten other finalists last week to win the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge in New York.

McCarty made it to the big apple after submitting a video using a wind tunnel to show how aerodynamics can be used to make buildings stronger. During the competition he participated in three challenges. The first was a communication challenge which involved presenting an experiment; the second challenge involved testing the “five second rule” for foods that have fallen on the ground and finally presenting an invention that solves some of America’s top safety and security issues.

The fifteen-year-old says he has always been interested in science and would “definitely love to incorporate science or math into a career or future endeavors.”

McCarty won $50,000 in U.S. Savings Bonds, a trip to the 3M Innovation Center to work on enhancing his invention, and the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist.”
