It may be the biggest sporting event in the region, that nobody knows about. About 2,000 athletes and 4,000 spectators are expected at the Footlocker National Cross Country Regional at U-W Parkside in Kenosha County on Saturday. The regional includes high school athletes from 14 states, from Colorado to Ohio. Regional director Pete Henkes says the Footlocker national championship is a chance for runners to see how they stack up against the best. "We've got the best cross country states in the nation," says Henkes. "Our all time list is virtually a who's who of U.S. distance running."

It's also a chance for the runners to meet and learn more about their sport. The top ten finishers in the boys and girls races go on to compete in the nationals in California. The event is also a boost for the region. "We fill every hotel from the state line to the airport," says Henkes. "Besides being a great event, it's a super financial impact for southeastern Wisconsin."
